Kupe Bay

Kupe Bay is named from an abbreviation of the larger bay’s name, Manuhakapakapa.
A homestead is located in this bay.
To the south of the bay is a point known as Iron Pot Point. It was named after an old whaling pot that was found lying in the scrub.1
In 1973 at Iron Pot Point a rare fossil of an extinct marine mollusc known as an ammonoid was located by J. B. Waterhouse.
The ammonoid species was named d’Urvilleoceras Woodmani Waterhouse.2

There are a number of attractive beaches in this bay. All of the coves on the northern side give good shelter in N sector winds. The water is deep, close to the shore, in this area and there are no outlying dangers. These coves are; however, open to all S sector winds.

Brightlands Bay

Completely open all N sector winds, which push a large sea into the bay.
Although there is calm water in S sector winds, the wind funnels out of the bay with considerable force.
The point off the eastern side of the bay is fringed with rocks and should be given a clearance of at least 50 metres.

Black Rock Bay is exposed to the N sector winds but would provide some shelter in S Sector winds. The bay shelves close to the shore but anchoring can be achieved in the middle of the bay. More

Cockle Cove has more room and has a combined club mooring and private jetties. This bay is mostly visited by bach owners.
The head of the cove is shallow. In N sector winds it is a good anchorage if boats are tied with a line to the western bank.
