Billhook Bay

The bay north of Billhook Bay is known as the Gut.
In 1973 at the point between Billhook Bay and the Gut a rare fossil of an extinct marine mollusc known as an ammonoid was found by J. B. Waterhouse.
The ammonoid species was named d’Urvilleoceras Woodmani Waterhouse.1

Ship Cove (Meretoto)

This bay is attractive and the surrounding hills are completely covered with native bush. There is a substantial wharf here as well as toilets, fireplaces and shelters around the grassy areas along the foreshore.
A swift river comes out into the bay between the wharf and monument and holding in this area can be very poor. Water is piped to the wharf.

Whites Bay

Since 2014, this bay has been officially recognised by the name, Pukatea/ Whites Bay.
This dual name is a result of respective Treaty of Waitangi settlements between iwi from Te Tau Ihu (tribes from the top of the South Island) and the Crown.1

Kupe Bay is named from an abbreviation of the larger bay’s name, Manuhakapakapa.

Scotts Bay is very exposed to the N to W sector winds, but there is some shelter from the S sector winds. There are a number of Mussel farms in the bay but there is a clear area for anchoring in the NE end of the Bay. More
Fairy Bay

There are a number of attractive beaches in this bay. All of the coves on the northern side give good shelter in N sector winds. The water is deep, close to the shore, in this area and there are no outlying dangers. These coves are; however, open to all S sector winds.
The western part of the bay is sheltered from most winds, but the head of the bay is extremely shallow.
